1990 年代初めに設置されたエレベータで「閉」ボタンが機能していることはほとんどないという。オーチスエレベータのエンジニアは 2003 年、Wall Street Journal の記事でこの事実を認めているとのこと。同様にオフィスのサーモスタットもダミーであることも多く、そこで働く人々に「制御できる」錯覚を与えることが目的に設置されている。
