ジェネラリストがいいのか、スペシャリストがいいのか――昔からの難問ですよね。ぼくは圧倒的にジェネラリスト派なんですが、ずいぶん前から、スペシャリスト偏重の風潮はあるなと感じています。でも、スペシャリストはスペシャリストだけでは機能しないというか、専門家をどう配置するか決めなくてはいけない。市場原理でうまい具合に陣立てされていくかと言えば、そうはなっていかないから、どうしたってジェネラリストは必要なんですよ。鳥瞰する人がね。

ペンキ職人とスーパーコンピューターを操るような人をネットでつなげてもたぶん、合意には達しないと思うんですね。むしろ中途半端にペンキについて知っていて、中途半端にスパコンに関しても知っている人がいなくちゃだめ。とはいえ、ある程度までくるとジェネラリストの仕事は終わります。最近のリフレをめぐる議論でも、あるいはフリーソフトの話でも、その発想自体がバカにされている時期は、ジェネラリストで素人のぼくがしゃしゃり出る余地はある。でもその議論がある程度の市民権を得て、細かい専門的な話になると、山形のような素人ジェネラリストの出番はないし、参考文献にすら名前も出してもらえない。それは寂しいけれど、でもそこに到達するまでは、その分野を知らないからこそ大胆な意見も言えるし、素人の戯れ言としてでも聞いてもらえて、そうした発想の普及に貢献するってのはあるんじゃないかな。
